NPC History
Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church began in 1877 with a charter enrollment of 48 members. During the first three years, the Murrysville United Presbyterian congregation worshipped in the Murrysville Methodist Church building. The congregation moved into the first church building on Mill Street in 1880. This building served the congregation for 40 years before it was razed in 1920 to make way for a larger building at what is now the corner of Vincent Hall Dr. and Route 22. The original congregation was made up of members from Beulah United Presbyterian Church, the “mother” church. When Beulah Church was dissolved in 1930, most of its remaining members transferred to the Murrysville church. By 1960, the church had outgrown the sanctuary, parking space and educational facilities, so five acres at the present site was purchased. The first Worship Service was held in the new sanctuary in November 1962.
We expanded our building over the years. In 1962 a Christian Education wing was completed. In 1968 we added a larger meeting hall and additional class room space. Fellowship Hall, Common Ground below it, and a kitchen were added in 1976. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1994. In 1998 additional class rooms and the gymnasium named the Activities and Recreation Center were added.
Due to the merger in 1958 of two denominations, the Presbyterian Church in the USA and The United Presbyterian Church of North America, into United Presbyterian Church in the USA, Murrysville was left with two churches with the same name. Being the younger church, our church changed our corporate name to Newlonsburg United Presbyterian Church in the USA. When the northern and southern streams merged in 1983, we became Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church (USA).
